What Is Digital Television?

Digital Television

We are seeing more and more that the channels in our programming lineups are turning over to digital. Yet many of us still have analog televisions that cannot view these channels in digital mode, but that is going to change sooner than later. We only have until 2009 before all of us have to be using some sort of digital device such as a digital television to view our television programming.

First off, one must understand what digital television is. Digital television uses digital signals to broadcast and receive sound and pictures. The modulation data is compressed digitally and then needs decoded by a special television (HDTV) or a receiver connected to the television that will decode the digital data. This explanation is more or less the 'in a nutshell' version to give you an idea of what digital television is.

Digital Television

Digital television is considerably more flexible than the current analog system that we use and uses less energy to provide a better picture. There is word that when the digital television switchover is complete, there will be free channels available for our viewing. Of course we'll have to wait and see if this really happens, but if it does, that will be a great thing for many people.

Yet not only does digital television allow for television stations to offer more services, but it frees up parts of our airwaves that are very scarce. With so many analog systems flying through the air, our airwaves are very congested. Yes, it is hard to fathom that our air could run out of room, but it is obviously possible and that is what is more or less forcing broadcasts of all kinds to go digital. At least digital terrestrial television means more simultaneous broadcasts and more capabilities for our favorite networks.

So with this said, you have probably learned prior to this article that you are either going to have to acquire a digital television to decode the digital signals broadcast by the stations or you will have to acquire a set top box that will allow your analog TV to receive the digital signal. Some consumers are already buying set top boxes and digital televisions so that they may view the digital television programs that already exist. They are getting an early taste of what the future has in store for all of us and they do say that the picture quality is much better and worth the price they have paid to acquire the digital tv signal.

At least when having to purchase a new digital television or a set top box, the US government, in particular, is providing a tax deduction to ease up the cost of having to replace or add to existing television equipment. Since the public has no choice to switch to digital television, this deduction is most certainly justified. And now here we are with less than two years to make sure we are compliant with the digital television technology so that we may be able to view our programs.
